Restorative dentistry

Restorative dentistry is the dental specialty that deals with the maintenance, care and conservation of your teeth using techniques such as fillings and root canals.

1. Direct techniques

Fillings

The teeth are reconstructed using resins that are applied in small layers using a careful anatomical layering technique.

The composite is sculpted layer upon layer to recover the form and function of the tooth. These restorative treatments take considerably longer than conventional fillings. Some layers imitate the dentine and others the enamel - so in a single tooth we can mix between 2 and 7 different composites to obtain a chameleon effect that mimics the original tooth as much as possible. With the layering technique we get a completely natural appearance that imitates the transparency, texture, opalescence and enamel tints etc....

Composite layering techniques producing highly aesthetic finishes require a great deal of training. We have a gallery of clinical cases allowing you to see the details of cases such as yours. We distinguish between two groups of teeth:

1.1 Anterior sector: central and lateral incisors, and canines

Aesthetic appearance is paramount for this group of teeth. Good work should be totally invisible. Using adhesive techniques, we not only treat the caries but we can also modify the tooth’s colour or shape ( small, fractured, worn or sloping teeth as well as old fillings).

We use an adhesive and restorative protocol that guarantees the longevity of our work over the medium and long-term. However, over time any restoration work will deteriorate and further repair or polishing might be necessary after a few years by means of a simple, rapid and painless procedure.

1.2 Posterior sector; molars and premolars

The technique is the same, we only change the properties of the resins employed, prepared to be more resistant to wear and mechanical force. Using layering techniques, we can place thin layers on top of each other, leading to less post-operative sensitivity (less tension is generated inside the tooth), longer life and higher mechanical and cosmetic properties.

Even though the cosmetic requirements are usually less on the part of the patients, it is important to maintain good morphology on the chewing surface, trying to imitate the cusps, grooves and forms. The more the tooth retains its initial characteristics, the better it will function over the long-term.

2. Indirect techniques

Dental inlays

The restoration of the tooth is done outside of the mouth, and to size. Afterwards, it is cemented into the dental cavity or to the structure of the remaining tooth. This technique is used on teeth that are very deteriorated.

Indirect restoration, being done outside of the mouth and to size, provides greater adjustment to the tooth surface and generates less internal tension since it is polymerised outside of the mouth (the chemical reaction that causes a composite to pass from a fluid/gel to a solid state after it has been sculpted by the dentist).

Inlays allow us to restore a very deteriorated molar almost without having to prepare it (filing it down). Nowadays, and whenever possible, this will be the treatment prior to a veneer as it offers excellent mechanical results and requires less filing down than for a veneer. Inlays can be porcelain or composite depending on their extension.
